SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a convicted felon for attempted murder.

On June 29, 2020, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Jose Manuel Zayas, 30, shot the victim on San Diego Lane in Dover. The victim was shot once and attempted to drive away from the scene of the crime thereafter. Minutes after the shooting, the victim called 911 and later observed Zayas leaving in another vehicle. It was later stopped by deputies at a convenience store located at 3185 N. Dover Road, about one mile from where the shooting took place.

A court-authorized search warrant was completed on the vehicle Zayas was seen driving away in, where a handgun was located. A shell casing consistent with the brand of ammunition used with the handgun found was located near the scene of the shooting.

The victim suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive.

“Thanks to the great investigative work of our detectives, this suspect is behind bars,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “He faces several charges, including Attempted Murder in the Second Degree. He remains at the Falkenburg Road Jail with no bond at this time.”
